 There is a Hondo(main hall)

 In 1188, Ashikaga Yoshikane (the 6th generation descendant of Ashikaga Takauji) invited  Taiko Gyoyu to be the first chief priest and built an esoteric Buddhism (Shingon school) temple.

Originally, the temple was called "Gokuraku-ji Temple."

Around 1257-1259, when Ryonen Geppo  (a disciple of Rankei Douryu, who founded Kencho-ji Temple) became the chief priest, the temple's school was changed to "Zen (Rinzai) temple."
Then the name was changed to "Jomyo-ji Temple." 

At its peak, it was a large temple with 23 sub-temples.
It was rebuilt in 1756 during the Edo period.

It is the 5th of the 5 mountains of Kamakura. (This indicates the status of the Zen temple.)

Yosemine structure・・・ a Japanese architectural style with a roof that slopes in four directions.and is roofed with copper .

 There is Kaisan do(temple hall commemorating its founding or its founder)

The first chief priest was  Taiko Gyoyu (a high-ranking priest at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine who was highly revered by Hojo Masako and Minamoto no Sanetomo).

It is a work from the Kamakura period and is a National Important Cultural Property.

③ There is plum garden

The plum blossoms bloom from early to late February.
It has been designated a national historic site.


 

④ There is a grave of  Ashikaga Sadauji

There is the grave of  Ashikaga Sadauji (father of Ashikaga Takauji) with the date 1392 engraved on it.


 

There is Kamatari Inari Shrine

It enshrines "Fujiwara Kamatari (who played an active role in the Taika Reforms)."

It is said that Fujiwara Kamatari buried his sacred sickle on this mountain to ensure the prosperity of his descendants.
This is why this area came to be called Kamakura.

1. From the East Exit of JR Kamakura Station, take the bus bound for Hachimangu Shrine and get off at Jomyoji. It's a 2-minute walk from there.
