This shrine was built in 1083 to commemorate "the bravery of Kamakura Gongoro Kagesada ".
It is also called "Gongoro Shrine."
In the war known as the Gosannen War, Kamakura Gongoro Kagesada is said to have "fought bravely" even after his left eye was shot through by the enemy .
In addition, a comrade tried to pull out an arrow that had pierced his left eye by putting his foot on Kamakura Gongoro Kagesada's face.
Kamakura Gongoro Kagesada is said to have scolded him, saying, "To die by arrow is a samurai's wish. So why are you stepping on my mask with your dirty feet?"
This story of bravery became a source of pride for the Kamakura samurai and was even made into a Kabuki play (japanese traditional play).
This is an old shrine that existed before the Kamakura Shogunate was established.
Hayashi Razan wrote that Goryo Shrine " has benefits for the eyes," based on the example of Kamakura Gongoro Kagesada, who returned alive after being hit by an arrow in his eye .
Annual grand Festival is held on September 18th every year . (It is said to be the anniversary of the death of Kamakura Gongoro Kagemasa.)
The Kamakura Kagura (also called Yutate Kagura) ritual is held.
During this festival , "a strange festival" called the Menkake Gyoretsu takes place. This mask procession is an intangible folk cultural asset designated by Kanagawa Prefecture , and has been continued since the Edo period.
Ten people march wearing masks of Old Man, Oni, Igyo, Karasu Tengu, Fire-breathing Man, Fukurokuju, Okame, and Woman.
The portable shrine follows afterwards .

"Fukurokuju ", one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Kamakura, is enshrined in the Kamakura Treasure House .I researched the Kamakura National Treasure Museum.

It is said that this is the pine tree where Kamakura Gongoro Kagemasa rested his bow when he went out .
This is a stone that conveys the bravery of Kamakura Gongoro Kagemasa .
It is said that he was able to lift the 105 kg "Tedamaishi" (hand ball stone) at will and place the 60 kg " Sodeishi" (sleeve stone) in his sleeve.
