There is the grave of Minamoto no Yoritomo.

Minamoto no Yoritomo is the "first Shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate".
He died on January 13, 1199 at the age of 53.

Minamoto no Yoritomo's grave is located at the top of the stairs next to Shirahata Shrine.

The grave is a multi-tiered pagoda.
The multi-tiered pagoda is said to have been "moved from Omidoji Temple" by Shimazu Shigehide in 1779 (An'ei 8).

When Minamoto no Yoritomo passed away, he was mourned at the Hokkedo.

① The Hokkedo was originally Minamoto no Yoritomo's "Jibutsudo" (a Buddhist statue that was worshiped on a daily basis: a place where the Kannon statue, which Yoritomo had deep faith in, was enshrined).
② After Minamoto no Yoritomo passed away, the name changed from Jibutsudo to Hokkedo (a mausoleum and tomb (ossuary).

③ In the Meiji era, the Hokkedo hall in front of his grave was destroyed as a result of the anti-Buddhist movement.
④ In 1872, Shirahata Shrine was built on the site, with Minamoto no Yoritomo as its deity.
