"The road to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine"

This is the approach to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine

The approach stretches in a straight line from (A) Yuigahama Beach to (B) Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine.
This road was the center of the urban development of Kamakura.

In 1986, it was selected as one of the "100 Best Roads in Japan" as a relic of the Kamakura Shogunate.
The approach is 1.8 km long.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine is crowded with about 2 million first shrine visitors at the beginning of the year.
It is also famous as  cherry blossoms viewing spot.

There are three torii gates on the approach

When viewed from Yuigahama, there are three torii gates on the approach: the first, second, and third torii gates.

You can see Dankazura.
Dankazura is...
The middle part of the road is made higher by piling up earth or placing kudzu stones. It also means that the width of the road gradually narrows as you go further along the road.

Roads built in this way will appear longer than their actual distance due to perspective.
It is said that this made it more difficult for enemies to invade the Kamakura Shogunate.

It is about a 3-minute walk from the east exit of JR Kamakura Station.
