The area where Gokurakuji Temple is located was once called " Hell Valley " because it was a place where dead bodies were abandoned and people with nowhere to go gathered. It is said that Gokurakuji Temple was built for this reason .

In the past, the temple grounds also housed medical and welfare facilities such as a hospital and a medicinal bathhouse. In its heyday, the temple had 49 sub-temples in addition to the main hall, lecture hall, and 13-story pagoda, and the surrounding valley was said to be the temple grounds. Currently, the main hall, Kissho-in, remains.

It is the only Shingon Risshu school temple in Kamakura .

In front of the main hall there is a stone bowl and a stone mill that are said to have been used by Ninsho to make medicine.
