There is  Dongeden(the main hall) 

It was built in 1281 to pray for the repose of the soul of Hojo Munemasa (the third son of Hojo Tokiyori, the fifth regent of the Kamakura shogunate and the man who solidified the power of the Hojo clan) .Hojo Munemasa died at the young age of 29.
The temple was built by his wife and their child (Hojo Morotoki).

 

The name of the main hall, Dongeden, is said to come from the legendary Udonga flower, which blooms only once every 3,000 years .
During the Kamakura period, when the temple was at its largest, it had as many as 11 sub-temples and was a large temple with 500 inhabitants.In the Showa period, the Great Kanto Earthquake occurred, and most of the temple was burned down.

The current building was rebuilt in the Showa period.

The temple grounds are designated as a national historic site as " Jochiji Temple Grounds . "

It is the fourth of the Kamakura Five Mountains . (This indicates the status of a Zen temple.)

There is a Kanro-no-i(well)

It is one of the " Ten Wells of Kamakura . "
It is said to have the power of Buddha to grant immortality.

It is no longer used as drinking water.


 

There is a well.

It is said to be the same water as that in the Kanro-no-i(well).


 

There is Sanmon(gate) 

The plaque reading " Hosho Zaikin " is posted on the wall. "
Hosho Zaikin " refers to the Buddhist teaching that " if you believe in Buddha and practice, you will find peace of mind ."


 

There is shoro-mon (a belfry gate)

This is the shoro-mon (a belfry gate) that can be seen during the Tang Dynasty in China .

Shoro-mon" refers to the Sanmon Gate with its bell tower.
On the first floor there is the Sanmon Gate.
On the second floor there is a flower-shaped window called a Katoumado and a temple bell .

When it was rebuilt in 2007, a plaque reading "Sankyoyusyou in the Mountains" was added.
In Kamakura, Jochi-ji Temple is the only place where you can see a Sanmon gate with a bell.


 

There is Shoin (Study Hall)

The house has a tiled roof.
It is like a house that comes out of a Japanese folk tale.Flowers such as irises, plum blossoms, and evening primroses bloom in the garden .

It is located next to the main hall.
It is the largest  Japanese cedar tree in Kamakura.

It is a species endemic to Japan, belonging to the family Scutellaria in the order Pinales.
The flower language is "elegance."
It is an evergreen conifer that grows tall.

It is considered one of the three most beautiful trees in the world,along with Himalayan cedar and Araucaria .
It is water-resistant and does not rot easily, so it is used as material for bathtubs and bridges.
The Japanese name Scutellaria was given to it because it grows in large numbers at the head temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect. It is also considered a sacred tree at Koyasan .


 
 
There is a juniper tree. 

Behind the Sanmon Gate there is a Juniper tree.
It is a designated natural monument of the city .

It is an evergreen tall tree of the Juniperus genus in the Cupressaceae family.
It is also called Ibuki.
The flower language is "I will protect you."
The bark is reddish brown and peels off in thin, long strips vertically.

The trunk may bend or twist. It is often planted at shrines and temples near the sea.


 
 
 
There is a Tachihigan.

This is a " Tahitigan " tree that is 21.6m tall and has a trunk circumference of 2.42m .
It is one of the" 100 Famous Trees of Kanagawa."

This is a cherry tree of the Prunus genus of the Rosaceae family.
The flower language is "spiritual beauty."
There are cherry trees whose branches wilt and cherry trees whose branches grow upwards.

At this temple, there is a "Tachi (standing) Higan" that does not wilt.

"It is said that stroking their plump bellies will give you energy .They have a smooth belly because so many people have stroked their bellies.


 There is Tenchuho.

It is said that "Jikusen Bonsen" (a high priest of the Rinzai sect who lived in China during the Yuan Dynasty) liked this hill so much that he named it"Tenchu" (heavenly pillar). It is said that "Tenchu" means "the morality that supports the world."

It is located on the Kuzuharagaoka Daibutsu hiking trail behind Jochiji Temple.


 

There are graves of famous people.

There is the grave of Tatsuhiko Shibusawa(1928-1987), a French literature scholar, novelist and essayist.
