According to the Kamakura period historical book "Azuma Kagami," the Great Buddha was built in 1252 .
It is Kamakura 6 Amida nyorai Buddhas , No. 1.
The bronze Buddha statue is 11.3 meters tall and weighs approximately 121 tons .
The Great Buddha was created under the influence of both ➀ " masculine characteristics" such as a" strong expression ," " appearance ," and " imposing physique " and②"characteristics of Buddhist statues" from the Song Dynasty in China .
It is said that when the Great Buddha was first completed, it was covered in gold leaf. Even now, you can see faint traces of gold powder on the left side .
When it was first built, it was enshrined inside a building, but the building was destroyed by two typhoons and a tsunami during the Muromachi period. Since then , it is said that it has been enshrined outside as it is today.
As a result, the statue fell into disrepair, and was restored in the mid-Edo period.It is said that the school also changed from " Rinzai " to " Jodo" at that time .
It is also called the "Great Buddha of Kamakura" and the " Great Buddha of Hase."
The inside of the Great Buddha is hollow and can be viewed.
This is the only Buddhist statue in Kamakura designated as a national treasure .

It was built around 1768.
There is a plaque bearing the mountain name " Daiizan " on it.
The straw sandals are 1.8m long, 0.9m wide, and weigh 45kg.The length of these sandals is said to be " almost the same length as the ears of the Great Buddha . "

The Matsuzaka Children's Association in Matsuei Town, Hitachiota City, Ibaraki Prefecture, creates and donates a large straw sandal once every three years.
