It is said that during the Heian period, Kobo Daishi (Kukai) performed goma rituals at the site where Jojuin Temple is now located. For this reason, Hojo Yasutoki (the third regent of the Kamakura Shogunate)invited a high priest from Kyoto to build Jojuin Temple here.
In 1333, Jojuin was burned down during Nitta Yoshisada's attack on Kamakura, but was rebuilt during the Edo period.
The main hall is not open to the public.
Goma -gyo(goma-ritual) is a training that involves ➀ chanting the mantra of Bodhisattva Kokuzo one million times over a period of 100 days .
It is said that by undergoing this training, one can understand all Buddhist scriptures.
Goma-gyo is the 13th of January, May, and September.

Kukai (Kobo Daishi) - A monk from the early Heian period.
(Posthumous name: Shigō, a name given to praise the deeds of nobles, monks, etc. during their lifetime: Kobo Daishi )
He was the first to preach Shingon Mikkyo(Esoteric Buddhism) .
He was also a writer and calligrapher, and is said to be one of the three most outstanding calligraphers of his time.
He brought Shingon Mikkyo(Esoteric Buddhism) from China as a Japanese envoy.
He opened Shingon-in temples at the Court, Shingon-in temples at Todaiji Temple, Toji Temple, and Kongobuji Temple at Mount Koya.
He also opened Shugei Shuchiin, Japan's first free school for common people.
He become a self-mummified monk at Mount Koya at the age of 62. (Sokushinbutsu:monks who practise austerity to the point of death and mummification)
