According to the picture scroll "Hoyake Amida Engi" at Kosokuji Temple ...
During the Kamakura period, Unkei, who had come to Kamakura at the invitation of the shogun , was asked by a wealthy woman named Machinotsubone to create the Amida Buddha.
One day, a monk named Manzai who served the town office was suspected of theft. As punishment, the town office branded Manzo on his cheek.
However, no marks remained on his cheek. Then, Amida buddha appeared in the town office's dream and asked, "Why are you branding my cheek with fire?"
When the town office went to check on Amida buddha, it is said that there was a burn mark on his cheek .
After that, the town office became a monk, built a temple called Ganzo-ji, and enshrined the Amida Triad there.

It is said that this statue came to be called Hoyake Amida(Cheek-burning Amida) because of the legend that he burned the cheeks of a priest suspected of theft .
