In 1336 , Nitta Yoshisada built this temple to mourn those killed in battle on the side of the Hojo clan , and invited Fuko Junsai to be the first chief priest .
It is said that the location of Kuhon-ji Temple was where Nitta Yoshisada set up his headquarters when he attacked Kamakura .
Nitta Yoshisada: A gokenin(vassal of the Shogunate) from the late Kamakura period to the Northern and Southern Courts period. He is said to have attacked Kamakura, defeated the shogunate, and driven the Hojo clan to suicide .
He was one of the key figures in the Kenmu Restoration that followed . When the Kenmu Rebellion broke out, he participated as the commander-in-chief of the Southern Court, and ended his life there.
The plaque reading "Kuhonji Temple" is said to be a copy of Yoshisada Nitta's original handwriting, which is on display inside the main hall.
It is the idea that "when you go to the afterlife, Amida Buddha will take you to one of nine different places in the afterlife depending on your actions in life."
