In 1181 , Minamoto no Yoritomo (first Shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate) invited Mongaku Shonin to be the first chief priest and built the temple.
Mongaku was a Shingon school monk active from the Heian to Kamakura periods.
He was exiled to Izu in anger after he forced Emperor Goshirakawa to restore Jingo-ji Temple. It is said that he became acquainted with Minamoto no Yoritomo in Izu Peninsula and helped him raise an army . It is said that this temple ( Kiganji temple ) is where Minamoto no Yoritomo made wishes to Buddha .
It was made in the Heian period.
It is Kamakura 13 Nyorai Buddhas, No. 17.

The Kamakura Festival is held on the second and third Sundays of April .
It is said that this red flag was held by the head of the Taira clan, Taira-no-Munemori (a Taira military commander , nobleman, and third son of Taira Kiyomori), until the end when the Taira clan was destroyed .
It is said that Minamoto no Yoritomo donated this red flag to Fudarakuji Temple .
It is open to the public from the second or third Sunday in April until the end of May.
