According to the shrine's tradition , it began in 552 when Emperor Kinmei ordered "the construction of a palace in a cave south of Enoshima ."

"The current shrine building" was built in 1976.

Enoshima Shrine consists of three shrines : Hetsumiya, Nakatsumiya, and Okutsumiya .

You can get the Enoshima Shrine goshuincho at "Hetsumiya".


 

② There is a  Hoanden(Bentendo hall)that enshrines one of the three great Benzaiten in Japan.

It is also called "Benten-do".
The building is "octagonal" in shape.
(It is said to have been modeled after the Yumedono Hall of Horyu-ji Temple.)

This enshrines "two Benzaiten".    
① One is " Happi Benzaiten"
 It is said to have been built by "Minamoto no Yoritomo"(the first Shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate)
It is also a National Important Cultural Property .

② The other one is " Myoen Benzaiten .
It is commonly known as " Naked Benzaiten " and is a masterpiece that depicts her holding a biwa.

" Enoshima Benzaiten " is counted as one of the three great Benzaiten in Japan, along with
1 ) Miyajima in Aki and
2) Chikubushima in Omi .

                              Ryujin(The dragon god) legend

"Enoshima Shrine" is said to be related to "the dragon god".

The story goes that Gozuryu(a five-headed dragon), who had been causing trouble, stopped being evil after falling in love with a celestial Tennyo(heavenly maiden) and married her.
It is said that
the heavenlyl maiden is Benzaiten, who is enshrined at ”Enoshima Shrine ”.
The five-headed dragon is also enshrined at” Ryukomyojin Shrine ”in Koshizuka .

Therefore, it is said that visiting both Ⓐ"Ryukomyojin Shrine", which enshrines the five-headed dragon , and Ⓑ" the Benten-do Hall of Enoshima Shrine", which enshrines the heavenly maiden (Benten-do), will bring you good fortune .

 


 
There is a sacred tree called "Musubi no Ki" that is also known as a power spot for matchmaking 

This sacred tree is a " Ginkgo tree . "

The branches were pruned due to the effects of the typhoon in 2018.

It is said that the tree brings "good fortune" because the two trunks join at the base.
It is a power spot for Blessing for a good marriage.

At the base there is a votive plaque with a pink heart drawn on it.


 

A "chichinowa" (a type of grass ring) is placed in front of the main hall all year round.
 

It is said that you can ward off bad luck by passing through the straw circle three times in an eight-shape .


 

 There is Zeniarai hakuryu-ou(Money Washing White Dragon King) 

It is said that "there is a golden coin" at the source where the rock water flows .

Therefore, it is said that if you purify the money in your wallet in front of the White Dragon King, you will be able to "increased financial fortune" and "gain good fortune".

It is located on the way from Hetsumiya to Nakatsumiya. (It is right next to Yasaka Shrine.)

This shrine assembles the "Akiba Inari", "Yosaburo Inari", "Gyocho Inari", and other shrines that were located on Enoshima .

Divine Blessing Protection from disaster,Good harvest

A fisherman found "a sacred statue" (Susanoo-no-Mikoto) sunken near a cave in the sea near Enoshima. This sacred statue wasⒶ ”the sacred statue of Koyurugi Shrine in Koshigoe, Kamakura,”which had been destroyed by a big wave , but  Ⓐhe was enshrined in Enoshima .

Therefore,the Enoshima Tenno Festival is held simultaneously at Ⓐ " Koyurugi Shrine" and Ⓑ "Enoshima Yasaka Shrine." The mikoshi ( the portable shrine) that departs from " Yasaka Shrine " travels through the sea to " Koyurugi Shrine ."

The summer festival "Enoshima Tenno Festival" is held every year from the first to second Sunday of July.
(During normal times when there is no risk of infectious diseases or typhoons.)

It has also been selected asone of the " 50 Best Festivals in Kanagawa . "


"On the second Sunday of July", when the festival takes place , the mikoshi is carried across the sea .
It's a very heroic sight.

It is a sub-shrine of the Hetsumiya Shrine of Enoshima Shrine .

 


 there is the Enoshima Escar
 
 

 You can reach the top of Enoshima in 4 minutes.

This is "an uphill escalator" that runs from Ⓐ the entrance to Enoshima Shrine to Ⓑ the top of Enoshima .
What would normally take about 20 minutes to walk up the 250 steps can now be completed in "just 4 minutes" .

② It is Japan`s first outdoor escalator. 

There are three sections to the top of Enoshima , each connected by an escalator.
① The total length is 106 meters.
② The difference in elevation is 46 meters .

①The first section is from Torii-mae to Hetsumiya .
②The second section is from Hetsumiya to Nakatsumiya .
③The third section is from Nakatsumiya to the summit .

This is an "outdoor paid escalator for going up only . "
Please note that to return from the top, you will have to go down the "downward stairs."
