In 1188, Ashikaga Yoshikane (the 6th generation descendant of Ashikaga Takauji) invited Taiko Gyoyu to be the first chief priest and built an esoteric Buddhism (Shingon school) temple.
Originally, the temple was called "Gokuraku-ji Temple."
Around 1257-1259, when Ryonen Geppo (a disciple of Rankei Douryu, who founded Kencho-ji Temple) became the chief priest, the temple's school was changed to "Zen (Rinzai) temple."
Then the name was changed to "Jomyo-ji Temple."
At its peak, it was a large temple with 23 sub-temples.
It was rebuilt in 1756 during the Edo period.
It is the 5th of the 5 mountains of Kamakura. (This indicates the status of the Zen temple.)
